Girls Learn International (GLI), a program of the Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF), is educating and energizing middle and high school students to boldly take action for human rights, gender equity, and access to education. With 165 active clubs across 28 U.S. states and 15 countries, GLI is training and mobilizing more than 3,500 young people ages 10-18. Together with our networks of student leaders, faculty advisors, and alumni, GLI is building a movement of informed advocates and a new generation of leaders and activists for social change.
GLI provides student clubs with educational materials and opportunities to learn about human rights, focusing on the obstacles girls and gender-expansive youth face in realizing their full rights, both in the U.S. and globally. GLI teaches leadership skills and provides opportunities for students to connect with a network of student advocates and leaders locally, nationally, and globally.
GLI members have access to the following opportunities:
The GLI Guidebook—The Guidebook is an online, interactive curriculum that allows students to choose from more than 45 meeting guides on various human rights and gender equity issues. Each year, clubs select one of our Advocacy Toolkits on an issue they care about and plan an event to raise awareness in their community.
Student Advisory Boards—Students lead monthly discussions with peers nationwide to discuss current events and ways to take action for equality.
GLI at the UN—FMF is a recognized non-governmental organization (NGO) with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). GLI students can participate in UN events, including the International Day of the Girl in October and the Commission on the Status of Women in March.
National Young Feminist Leadership Conference—Every March, our NYFLC brings together hundreds of middle and high school students in Washington, DC. Participants gather to share strategies of resistance, better understand critical domestic and global feminist issues, and learn hands-on grassroots organizing tactics.
Summer Activist Training Camp—The SATC is a four-week virtual camp where students can hone their advocacy skills and hear from issue-area experts on relevant topics.
There is never any cost to start a GLI club or to obtain program materials, including access to the GLI Guidebook. Any interested teacher, administrator, or student can apply to start a GLI club.
