The Reinforcing Education Accountability in Development (READ) Act Reauthorization Act of 2023

What?

The Reinforcing Education Accountability in Development (READ) Act Reauthorization Act of 2023 is a reauthorization of the original 2017 READ Act, an important bill that protects the US Government's international basic education strategy and ensures congressional oversight, transparency, and other accountability measures. The 2017 READ Act, which historically has had strong bipartisan support, expires on September 30th of this year. The READ Act Reauthorization Act of 2023 would reauthorize the Act for an additional five years, continuing current U.S. efforts to ensure equal access to quality education for children throughout the world.

Why?

Passing the READ Act could transform the world, and uplift girls, children with disabilities, and other marginalized communities. Education is a key solution to poverty, with ripple effects that impact individual lives, future generations, and entire societies. Did you know…

  • Girls with no education are three times as likely to marry before age 18 as those with secondary education.
  • For each year of school completed, future wages increase an average of 10 percent. This impact is even greater for girls. On average, for a girl in a poor country, each additional year of education will lead to up to 20 percent higher wages.
  • No country has achieved continuous and rapid economic growth without at least 40 percent of adults being able to read and write.

Urge your members of Congress to support the READ Act by filling out this form. It only takes 30 seconds to make a difference.
