Association d’Aide à l’Education de l’Enfant Handicapé

Founded in 1998, Association d’Aide à l’Education de l’Enfant Handicapé (AAEEH) is a charitable and humanitarian organization, working locally, nationally and internationally. The organization's areas of intervention focus on social assistance for people with disabilities, humanitarian aid and development. It works for the education of children with disabilities and the consideration of disability in public education policies and development programs. AAEEH's vision is that people with disabilities can become independent through education and participate fully to society. Since 2013, AAEEH has been in special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), signed and ratified by most countries, stipulates that « States Parties shall ensure that children with disabilities are not excluded, on the basis of their disability, from the system of education ».

In line with UN CRPD, the Association d’Aide à l’Education de l’Enfant Handicapé (AAEEH) aims to contribute to:

  • the promotion and realization of the right to education for children with disabilities
  • research on education and disability issues
  • the empowerment of people with disabilities, especially girls, through education and training.
  • the achievement of quality, inclusive education for ALL

Currently, AAEEH is helping to provide education for children with disabilities and working to address cross cutting issues that hinder the education of girls with disabilities (gender stereotypes, gender based violence, reproductive health) with more than five projects in six countries in Europe and the sub-saharan Africa. In 2021, AAEEH launched an ongoing project for adolescent girls with disabilities titled Dignity Kits. The project aims at breaking the taboo around reproductive health and disability, amplifying voices, advocating and providing information to adolescent girls with disabilities and responses that take into account the real need expressed by the beneficiaries to alleviate menstrual precariousness. Please follow this link to learn more about Dignity Kits.

AAEEH activities are oriented towards:

Awareness-raising: We raise awareness about the challenges that children with disabilities face in accessing education, with the goal of getting communities to join this cause, to invest in it and to provide their support.

Advocacy: We work to ensure that the issue of disability receives support; we contribute to debates and advocacy campaigns on education, disability and gender; we strive to integrate disability into development policies and programs and establish strategic partnerships to strengthen our advocacy.

Multifaceted support for education of students with disabilities: We inform, guide, accompany and support students with disabilities and/or families in the various procedures  and ways.

Research: We conduct or participate in collaborative research projects (assessment needs, case studies).

We use right based and needs approaches as the methodology for our interventions. Please follow this link to learn more about AAEEH's projects.
