The Global Campaign for Education-US (GCE-US) welcomes the decision from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) to end funding used “to support for-profit provision of core education services.”
GCE-US believes that compulsory education is a public good and a fundamental human right that all duty-bearers must fulfill. Therefore, we applaud GPE’s continued commitment to ensuring access to free, quality, inclusive education for all children and youth.
Evidence has shown that for-profit provision of education disproportionately excludes girls, lower income children and other marginalized groups, deepens educational inequalities, and raises concerns about education quality and democratic accountability. Given this concerning reality, we thank GPE for affirming their dedication to strengthening public education systems and recognizing the government’s role in supporting 12 years of free publicly funded equitable, quality education.
We are grateful to the combined efforts of the civil society leaders who worked tirelessly to promote these values and we will continue to advocate against barriers to education alongside them.
At the Global Campaign for Education - US, we advocate to ensure that all achieve the right to quality, inclusive education. You can take action and join in by:
