How Education Changed the Life of a Young Syrian Girl
Born a refugee in Lebanon just before the COVID-19 pandemic, Samar* and her family endured intense economic strife, housing and food insecurity, and chronic health conditions. Life as refugees in Lebanon was marked by uncertainty, and each day brought new challenges that tested their strength, hope, and resilience. Yet, through education and the support from Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), Samar is looking towards the future with newfound excitement and curiosity. This is her story.
Samar’s parents fled Syria in 2014, seeking safety after her father opposed the regime. A year later, Samar’s older brother, Omar, was born in Lebanon, and the family continued to struggle with the many difficulties of displacement. Through a local community center, Samar’s mother connected with JRS.
JRS Lebanon stepped in to provide essential support. Samar’s earliest years were marked by a chronic medical condition that not only delayed her education but also eroded her confidence and sense of belonging. JRS took notice, providing social work support, tutoring, and eventually enrolling her in the JRS Lebanon education program.
“The timely intervention of JRS Lebanon brought Samar back to life, igniting a sense of joy and enthusiasm within her,” her mother said.
“Upon being informed about Samar’s situation, we made every effort to provide her with attentive care, encourage her active involvement, and facilitate the development of friendships,” Samar’s English teacher commented.
In the classroom, Samar thrived. Her teachers praised her intelligence, determination, and kindness. Her English teacher noted how her shy demeanor faded as she gained confidence, while her Arabic tutor commended her commitment to learning and the remarkable progress she made in a short time.
“Samar demonstrated commitment to her schoolwork, adhered to rules, and exhibited remarkable academic progress,” her tutor said.
With access to education, medical support, and a caring community, Samar overcame immense challenges. Today, she looks to the future with hope, dreaming of becoming a doctor to help children facing illnesses like hers.
Her journey is a testament to the power of opportunity. It is a reminder that with the right support, even the most vulnerable can reclaim their futures and that, in the face of hardship, hope is often found in the smallest moments of courage and care. Looking towards the future now, Samar dreams of becoming a doctor and helping other young girls who deal with chronic health issues.
