GCE-US Statement on U.S. Withdrawal from UNESCO

July 22, 2025 | GCE-US

The Global Campaign for Education-US (GCE-US) expresses deep concern over the United States’ decision to withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

UNESCO plays a vital role in supporting countries to develop education systems that provide quality lifelong learning opportunities for all and empower learners to be creative and responsible global citizens. This decision undermines decades of progress in multilateral cooperation and global education advocacy.

Giulia McPherson, Executive Director of GCE-US, stated: “The U.S. withdrawal from UNESCO sends a troubling signal about our commitment to global education and cultural diplomacy. UNESCO has been a critical partner in advancing equitable access to education worldwide and stepping away from this collaboration risks isolating the U.S. from the international community at a time when collective action is more important than ever.”

GCE-US remains committed to working with international partners, civil society, and U.S. policymakers to ensure that education remains a priority in global development and diplomacy.
