GCE-US “DISAPPOINTED IN THE RECENT USAID BASIC EDUCATION BUDGET REQUEST.”

Washington, D.C.---The Global Campaign for Education-US Chapter echoes Representative Nita Lowey’s vocal disappointment in the recent US Agency for International Development (USAID) FY15 Budget request for basic education.

In her opening statement at the Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Hearing on the FY15 Budget Request for USAID on April 8, 2014, Representative Lowey said she “was disappointed to hear that the FY 2015 budget request again underfunds basic education,” as “education is the essential foundation for health, economic development, gender equality and long-term security.”

“We completely agree with Representative Nita Lowey, who as a champion for global education in Congress has seen the power of education,” said GCE-US Executive Director, Dr. Edwin Gragert. “It is truly baffling that education continues to be woefully under budgeted by USAID when so much work remains to be done. By investing in education we can ensure the positive future of youth, families, communities and countries.”
