From Dreams to Recognition:
UWS Impact in Marginalized Communities
United World Schools (UWS) collaborates with international partners, local communities, and governments to ensure that children in remote and marginalized communities have free access to quality, inclusive education.
At UWS, every child we reach and every school we build shares one goal: to create lasting, community-driven change through education.
In 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake and a series of aftershocks destroyed 35,000 classrooms in Nepal. Since then, UWS has built 505 earthquake-resilient classrooms across 60 schools, giving 11,500 students access to education.
Take Asha is a bright and ambitious 9-year-old from Hedangnagadhi, Nepal. Asha enrolled at UWS Hedangnagadhi, a school providing free, quality education in her remote community. Now in Grade 4, Asha is thriving in her studies and as an enthusiastic member of her school’s STEAM Club (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), exploring science and technology with her friends.
Asha dreams of becoming a doctor—not just for herself, but to serve people in her community who lack access to healthcare. With her school, teachers, and family's support, that dream feels more possible every day.
And now, stories like Asha’s are being echoed across Nepal, with UWS schools gaining recognition for their impact.
At UWS schools, communities take ownership of their education systems after 5 years by participating in school governance, contributing to school development, and taking an active role in decision-making. This grassroots model ensures that education policies and practices are aligned with local needs and values, leading to a stronger and more sustainable future.
By backing the people who live in the communities we serve, we respect and amplify the fight for Zero Education Poverty.
We’re thrilled to share that UWS Jaisithok School in Gulmi has just been awarded the Best Primary School in Dhurkot Rural Municipality!
Constructed in 2019 and transitioned to local leadership in 2024, UWS Jaisithok is a model of what sustainable, community-owned education can look like. The award comes with a grant, which the school will use to:
- Improve school infrastructure with painting, repairs, and fencing
- Enhance the learning environment with eco-friendly dustbins
- Promote climate-friendly, student-led initiatives
This achievement is a testament to the dedication of the head teacher, school management committee, teachers, students, and the local community—all working together to create a school that educates and inspires.
Asha’s journey and Jaisithok School's recognition prove that incredible things happen when access, quality, and community leadership come together.
From a single student’s dream of becoming a doctor to an entire school being honored for excellence, these milestones remind us why UWS exists: to empower children, support communities, and transform futures—one classroom at a time.
